A new book of a supposedly lost Van Gogh’s sketchbook was released yesterday and it is already creating controversy among Van Gogh’s experts.  The experts at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam is not convinced that the drawings are indeed Van Gogh’s.  And looking at this cover I can see where there are coming from, there are some serious issue with its physical structure, proportions and shading.  I’m also not convinced nor impressed.  More information: Van Gogh Experts Go Head to Head Over Long-Lost Sketchbook Claim

Mr. James Grundvi, a construction manager who spent 3 years studying a Van Gogh’s book (not sure which one), published a book called ‘Breaking Van Gogh‘ where he  claims that one of Van Gogh’s most famous pictures, ‘Wheat Field with Cypresses‘ (Metropolitan Museum)  is a fake. Full article: New York Post

The Met has gamely played along and pointed out all the evidence in favour of the picture, including the fact that it is painted on the same bolt of canvas as many of his other pictures.

I still bought the book and will read it, just for the sake of it.

A dearly friend of mine gave me this book for Christmas, and I have to say I fell in love with it after the first page. I believe it will take me a while to finish it, since I’m enjoying every bit of it and want to make it last as long as I can.

In this book, Wildenstein provides us with lots of detailed information, illustration, and using his wide art history knowledge, he also cleverly compares and/or assimilates Monet with others painters; not only in the impressionism style but also in other movements.

I’ve always admired Daniel Wildenstein, not only for his work and contribution for the art world, but also for his Impressionism’s appreciation and dedication,  which we both share, and if I may boldly say,  with the same intensity.  And now reading this book I believe an allegiance is being created.

Daniel was very faithful to Monet’s image and work, giving the reader an unique opportunity to get to know Claude, familiarize with his easygoing personality,  understand his dreams, and to fall in love not only with the “Father of  The Impressionism” but also with the man behind the canvas.

Here is a very interesting conversation with Noah Charney where he talks about his book “The Art Of Forgery“, and his research on how our brains can distinguish genuine artworks from fake:

A Forger’s Tale

Portrait of a young Lady by Leonardo da Vinci

In his book “A Forger’s Tale” Shaun Greenhalgh claimed to have drawn La Bella Principessa, work attributed to Leonard Da Vinci after extensive and expensive researches were done, including large number of scientific tests (carried out by Pascal Cotte), experts analyses (Martin Kemp) and even a fingerprint, supposedly Leonard’s, was found in the drawing.

In response to the Greenhalgh claim, Pascal Cotte has released some new (previously unpublished) results from his tests. These showed conclusively, he said, that radio-active decay levels in the pigments confirmed a date earlier than the 17th Century. In response, Greenhalgh claimed that he made his own pigments from organic materials of appropriate age, including ‘iron-rich clay and charcoal from ancient trees.

This come to show how fragile the art world can be, and how forgery is becoming an art in and of itself: LaBellaPrincipessa

Let’s stay tuned!

51lB9S-R0KL._SY344_BO1,204,203,200_Catherine Hickley, an expert on WWII stolen art has written a new book called “Hitler’s Art Dealer.”  This is an article about the book: Hitler’sArtDealer.  I’m excited to read it and learn more about the “Munich’s” obsession in art and his felonious ways to obtain it; which I always thought transcribes perfectly some of his characteristics: inconsiderate, manipulative and superficial.
