For the first time in half a century, visitors to the world’s largest cultural institution, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, will have to pay a mandatory admission fee of $25 if they do not live in New York State under a new policy that begins March 1, the museum announced on Thursday. (New York Times reported)

Daniel H. Weiss, Met’s new CEO, says in this interview that the “increase” of Met’s entry fees is due to the decrease of contributors and the failure of “pay-as-you-wish” policy:  Met Museum President Daniel Weiss Answers Questions About the New Admissions Policy

Even though I like the novelty of this honorable policy, I do not think it is very practical nowadays, specially for the arts and cultural institutions; which might differ in the next 10 to 15 years.  I also suspect that the questionable financial management of the last few years also influenced his decision.  Let’s hope this change can come as a big help for our so loved national treasure museum.

The Borghese Gallery has announced its own formation of the Caravaggio Research Institute; with the help of some supporters the institute will home some of Caravaggio’s works and serve as an authentication and art-historical research study center. At a press conference, Galleria Borghese director Anna Coliva said the institute was formed “since the great specialists of Caravaggio are no longer here, anyone can decide to attribute a piece to the artist.”

The Borghese’s will also be hosting some international exhibition of the artist, the first one being at the Getty Museum opening on November 21, 2017, which I really, really and really would like to attend, so if you are in California or near by and able to go please send me an email letting me know how it went, I would appreciate it!  And if you like me are in the east coast don’t be jealous, we got Michelangelo at the Met. If you, like me, are in e-commerce, one of our main concern is “public-domain” when using work of art images.  ALL of the paintings by the old Renaissance Masters are in the public domain; however, if you are using a photo of a painting, that photo may not be in public domain, even if it is in the internet, and sometimes those photos are protected by a copyright.

Thankfully, in the beginning of this year the Metropolitan Museum of art made its images freely available through New Open Access policy, making our lives a little easier, here is about the policy, and how to obtain those images: Images of Artworks in the Public Domain

The Metropolitan Museum is planning this amazing exhibition that can be considered “once in a lifetime’ Michelangelo show”, bringing about 150 drawings, sculptures and paintings. The exhibition will be titled “Michelangelo: Divine Draftsman and Designer,”  opening in November this year. I cannot wait! Read more here.

Thomas Campbell, the met director, has resigned his post after 8 years.  There are rumours he was forced to do so after so many failures attempts and projects to improve met’s unstable financial condition.  In my opinion his plan to construct a $600 million wing for Modern and contemporary art was unnecessary, especially after Met Breuer was built.  I will miss him and his friendly smile, wish him the best!. Met’s Open Access

Yesterday The Met announced a major update to the Museum’s policy governing the use and reuse of images in our collection: all images of public-domain artworks in the Museum’s collection are now available for free and unrestricted, this updated policy, known as Open Access, enables everyone to utilize more than 375,000 images of public-domain artworks in The Met’s collection in any media without permission or fee.

This is huge leading edge attitude;  by digital open access the Met is tearing down its own walls, giving everyone the opportunity to experience what its collection has to offer. Connecting people to the great masters, their works, their ideas and their knowledge. Allowing more than 5 thousand years of history to be seeing all around the world, inspiring  and educating the masses.

The Met is showing us that art is much more than its cost, it is about its value; and its value increases when it is shared.

There is no good reason why fine art should be “elited.”  It is part of our culture, our history, our own selves.

Here is more details about this policy: Open Access Policy

Mr. James Grundvi, a construction manager who spent 3 years studying a Van Gogh’s book (not sure which one), published a book called ‘Breaking Van Gogh‘ where he  claims that one of Van Gogh’s most famous pictures, ‘Wheat Field with Cypresses‘ (Metropolitan Museum)  is a fake. Full article: New York Post

The Met has gamely played along and pointed out all the evidence in favour of the picture, including the fact that it is painted on the same bolt of canvas as many of his other pictures.

I still bought the book and will read it, just for the sake of it.
