Hi everyone,

I would like to apologize for the lack of posts lately, I’ve been super busy with my new project. It is demanding my full attention for right now, but I’m very excited about it,  and soon I’ll be able to share it with you guys!!!!    Have a lovely end of summer, and thanks for the emails.  Much Love – Juliana

If you, like me, are in e-commerce, one of our main concern is “public-domain” when using work of art images.  ALL of the paintings by the old Renaissance Masters are in the public domain; however, if you are using a photo of a painting, that photo may not be in public domain, even if it is in the internet, and sometimes those photos are protected by a copyright.

Thankfully, in the beginning of this year the Metropolitan Museum of art made its images freely available through New Open Access policy, making our lives a little easier, here is about the policy, and how to obtain those images: Images of Artworks in the Public Domain

The Market for 2017

Here is a nice article on the Art Market for 2017: Art market predictions for 2017.  I really liked what Jussi Pylkanen from Christie’s said: “The art world is very simple, in any era and in any economic climate, the greatest artworks by the greatest artists generate record prices – forget the period. In 2016, Rembrandt eclipsed Monet, De Kooning and Rubens.”  Quality will always have value.

What does it take?

What does it take to move people?

What does it take to make them happy?

What does it take to teach them feelings?

To unite continents

To inspire a smile?

To combine sciences and faculties?

To speak to the scholars as well as to plebeians?

It takes simplicity,

It takes madness,

It takes blue as well as yellow,

And in grand quantities.

It takes him,

It takes Vincent

No last name needed.

(working on my speech…)

Hercules Segers and Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum (with the help of the Metropolitam Museum) has added a number of newly attributed works of Hercules Segers, reports The New York Times, this research has been done for a new exhibition on Segers’ life, which opens at the Rijksmuseum on October 7th till January 8th, when it will then travel to the Met in New York, where it opens on February 13th. More about the research: Sergers.

Serger is not a very well known artist; I only “discovered” him after the British Museum’s exhibition on his printings and etchings back in 2012.  After reading a little about his techniques (and innovative methods) I was inspired to experiment, and after lots of unsuccessful attempts I found out that adding honey to acrylic paint not only prolongs its working life, but it also gives it a brighter tonality.

Rembrandt was also influenced by him, so much so that he started to collect Serge’s work for himself; even Turner was impressed with Serger’s colored ink two hundred years later, and today we are able to see his impact in Turner’s work.

Comparing Titans

One of the positive thing about being sick at home is that I’m able to catch up on my “watch later” videos. Like this one where they try to compare Rembrandt to Vermeer, and even thought I believe there is no way to successfully do it, I must say they did a good job trying; making it clear that it is not about the Artist you love the most, but the artists you know less.

Comparing the Masters is like comparing oranges and apples, they both have unique qualities, they both show us a piece of their heaven, they both bring us closer to God.

Is Rembrandt a Cheater?

In this article The Mirrors Behind Rembrandt’s Self-Portraits Francis O’Neill, an artist and art teacher from England, suggests that Rembrandt used mirrors to project his images on the canvas to facilitate his drawing technique.

I find this suggestion very much improbable.  Rembrandt was not only a great artist but a marvelous painter, and to accuse him of “cheating” in such a basic skill  like drawing is comic.  It is interesting that the “accuser” is an artist himself, which leads me to conclude that because he, himself, cannot do what Rembrandt did effortlessly, gave in to the temptation to assume that somehow this great Old Master had cheated.

New Rembrandt?

Experts used technology to create (or recreate) a new Rembrandt painting. The picture, below, was made by scanning in over 50 Rembrandt portraits, and a computer programme made up a ‘new’ Rembrandt-like face. The result was then printed on a 3D printer:

Next rembrandt

Even though it wasn’t able to capture Rembrandt’s personality fully, mysterious hints, his ingenious power of expressing a soul and its crisis, and the proportion of the neck is a little off; I still like the result. Modern technology is becoming a big ally for the Art World.
